The removal of the TV ad cap: what happened?

In 2006 viewers had few channels and analog cable with little space. A cap on ads protected them. Today there are hundreds of channels and digital media has no such limit. The Ministry says the market can now decide.

  • Channels rose from 62 in 2006 to more than 900 now.
  • DTH, cable, HITS and IPTV are all digital, carrying 300 to 500 channels or more.
  • TV in India depends heavily on ads, pay or free-to-air.
  • Digital media has no ad cap, so TV faced an uneven field.
Back Story

Why was the cap there?

  • Analog cable had limited carriage capacity and little consumer choice.
  • With digitisation, viewers can switch easily, which checks excessive ads.
Why examiners care

Why does the removal of the TV ad cap matter?
