Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: what happened?
Stepwells, tanks, johads and ponds show that Indian villages once treated water as shared work. Growing populations, expanding farms and fast urbanisation made water management far more complex. JSJB tries to bring community effort back, now with scientific planning behind it.
- JSJB builds low-cost groundwater recharge and storage structures and revives defunct borewells.
- It follows a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach.
- The Ministry of Jal Shakti’s first Departmental Summit was held in New Delhi on 1 to 2 September 2026.
- JSJB: Catch the Rain was one of the Summit’s four thematic pillars.
- The PM suggested a “Jal Utsav”, water governance courses in universities, inter-State study visits and better water data governance.
How has JSJB grown?
| Phase | Period | Output |
|---|---|---|
| JSJB 1.0 | 6 September 2024 to May 2025 | more than 27 lakh structures |
| JSJB 2.0 | June 2025 to May 2026 | more than 1.5 crore structures |
| JSJB: Catch the Rain | from June 2026 | more than 1.58 crore structures in all, as of 3 September 2026 |

What were the four pillars of the Jal Shakti Summit?
- Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain.
- Water infrastructure projects.
- Source sustainability of drinking water systems.
- Rural water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
What do local examples show?
| Place | What was done | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Korea district, Chhattisgarh | Aawa Paani Jhoki: farmers gave 5% of their land to recharge ponds and pits | 1,260+ farmers; 2,000+ soak pits; groundwater up 3 to 4 m; springs revived in 17 tribal hamlets |
| Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh | ridge-to-valley structures in Murugummi, Marella, Thangella | about 5,900 people gained groundwater access |
| Jajpur district, Odisha | 117 ARUA recharge shafts, 114 CHHATA rooftop systems (2022–23 to 2025–26) | steadier water supply; less time fetching water |
| Cuttack district, Odisha | 57 CHHATA rooftop systems, 35 ARUA shafts | deep aquifer recharge |
How does the ridge-to-valley approach work?
- Village plans water budget and crops in Gram Sabha
- Structures built on higher ridge areas first
- Rainwater slowed as it flows down to the valley
- Water stored and recharged into the ground
- Soil and water conservation strengthened downstream
Why does Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari matter?
| Angle | What to note |
