UPSC Mains 2014 GS Paper 4 Q2a: model answer
In the context of defence services, ‘patriotism’ demands readiness to even lay down one’s life in protecting the nation. According to you, what does patriotism imply in everyday civil life? Explain with illustrations and justify your answer.
What the question wants
Explain, with examples, what patriotism means in a citizen's everyday life, apart from a soldier's sacrifice.
How to structure it
Define, then everyday forms.
- Patriotism as love of country
- Everyday forms
- Illustrations
- Patriotism vs jingoism
How to think it through
Patriotism: love and duty towards the nation, its people and Constitution. Everyday: paying taxes, voting, obeying traffic rules, not littering, respecting diversity, honest work, Fundamental Duties Article 51A, protecting public property, helping in disasters. Illustrations: Arunachalam Muruganantham low-cost sanitary pads; citizens who ran COVID oxygen help; voters in Chhattisgarh's LWE areas. Tagore's caution: patriotism cannot be our final spiritual shelter—humanity. Distinguish from jingoism.
Model answer
A soldier may be asked to die for the country once. A citizen is asked to live for it every day, in small acts nobody applauds.
What patriotism means
- Love of the country shown as duty towards its people and its Constitution, not only pride in its flag.
Patriotism in everyday life
- Honest taxes: every rupee evaded is a rupee taken from a school or hospital.
- Voting: many voters in Chhattisgarh's Maoist-affected areas walk long distances to cast their ballot.
- Respecting public property and rules: not littering, not jumping signals, not damaging trains during protests.
- Respecting diversity: treating every caste, faith and region as fellow citizens, as the Fundamental Duties (Article 51A) ask.
- Doing one's own work well: Arunachalam Muruganantham, who built low-cost sanitary pad machines for rural women, served the nation without a uniform.
- Helping in crises: citizens ran oxygen and blood donor networks during the 2021 COVID wave.
A word of caution
- Patriotism is not hatred of others. Tagore warned that patriotism cannot be our final
spiritual shelter; humanity must remain above it.
For most of us, patriotism means keeping the country honest, clean and fair every day.
Draw: A small circle 'soldier at border' inside a large circle 'citizen every day', with five everyday acts around it.
