UPSC Mains 2019 GS Paper 4 Q6b: model answer
“A man is but a product of his thoughts. What he thinks he becomes.” – M. K. Gandhi
What the question wants
Explain what Gandhi's line that a man becomes what he thinks means to you.
How to structure it
Meaning, mechanism, today, me.
- Thoughts → actions → character
- Evidence (psychology, Indian thought)
- Present
- Application
How to think it through
Dhammapada opening verse: 'mind is the forerunner'. Thought → words → habits → character → destiny chain. Psychology: CBT, self-fulfilling prophecy, Pygmalion effect (Rosenthal 1968), growth mindset (Dweck). Present: negativity on social media, hate thoughts→hate acts; positive: Mary Kom, Arunima Sinha (Everest 2013 after losing leg). Officer: thinking of citizens as beneficiaries vs burdens.
Model answer
The Dhammapada opens with the same idea: mind comes first; we are shaped by our thoughts. Gandhi gave it a practical turn: change what you think, and you will change who you are.
What it means
- Thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habits, and habits become character.
Why it holds
- Psychology: cognitive behavioural therapy works by changing thought patterns.
- The Pygmalion effect: in Rosenthal's 1968 classroom study, pupils whom teachers believed to be bright made larger gains.
- Self-belief: Arunima Sinha lost a leg after being pushed from a train in 2011 and climbed Everest in 2013; her thinking refused the limit others set.
In the present context
- Constant exposure to hate or despair online shapes how people act offline.
- Stereotypes, once thought often enough, turn into discrimination.
What it means to me
- Replace 'I can't' with 'not yet', the growth mindset idea.
- As an officer, think of citizens as partners, not as burdens; the behaviour will follow the thought.
A caution
- Thinking alone does not change the world; it must lead to effort.
Watch your thoughts; they are rehearsals for your actions.
Draw: A staircase: thought → word → action → habit → character → destiny.
