UPSC Mains 2020 GS Paper 4 Q5b: model answer
The current internet expansion has instilled a different set of cultural values which are often in conflict with traditional values. Discuss.
What the question wants
Discuss how the internet has brought new cultural values that often clash with traditional ones.
How to structure it
New values, clashes, balance.
- Values the internet spreads
- Clashes
- Positive side
- Balance
How to think it through
Internet values: individualism, instant gratification, openness, free expression, consumerism, global culture, informality, privacy debates, online identity. Traditional: family authority, community, respect for elders, modesty, patience, rituals. Clashes: generation gap, dating apps vs arranged marriage, online speech vs respect, privacy vs sharing, influencer culture, fast fashion. Positives: voices for marginalised (#MeToo 2018), access to knowledge, questioning caste, connecting diaspora with culture. Balance: digital literacy, family dialogue.
Model answer
A grandmother in a village learns to make video calls; her granddaughter in the city posts her daily life for strangers. The internet has carried new cultural values into Indian homes faster than any earlier change.
New values the internet spreads
- Individualism and self-expression.
- Instant gratification: quick likes, quick news, quick shopping.
- Openness about personal life.
- Global culture and consumer trends.
- Questioning authority and tradition.
Where they clash with traditional values
- Elders' authority versus young people's own choices.
- Privacy and modesty versus constant sharing.
- Patience and depth versus short attention spans.
- Community versus online individualism.
- Respect versus harsh online speech and trolling.
The positive side
- #MeToo (2018) gave women a voice against powerful men.
- Knowledge reaches remote areas.
- Diaspora stays connected with its roots.
- Caste and gender barriers are questioned openly by young people online.
Finding balance
- Digital literacy and family conversations.
- Keep core values like respect and compassion; adapt the forms.
- Parents who model healthy screen habits.
The internet is not against tradition; it tests which parts of tradition are values and which are just habits.
Draw: A two-column table: internet values versus traditional values, with a bridge of 'core values' between them.
Keywords, cases and data to drop in
internet culture, individualism, instant gratification, openness, global culture, generation gap, privacy, trolling, #MeToo 2018, digital literacy, core vs form.
Where most answers lose marks
- Writing only negatives; the question says 'often in conflict', not always.
