Overseas Indians are of two kinds:
- NRIs: Indian citizens living abroad, like a nurse from Kerala working in Dubai.
- PIOs: people of Indian origin who hold foreign citizenship. Many hold an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, a lifelong visa.
MEA’s data as of January 2026 counts 3,72,80,845 overseas Indians: 1,95,20,317 PIOs and 1,77,60,528 NRIs (MEA estimate compiled from missions).

MEA, Population of Overseas Indians, as of January 2026 (estimates).
Indians went abroad in three waves:
- indentured labour (workers bound by contract for years) to plantation colonies in the 19th century, such as Mauritius, Fiji, the Caribbean and South Africa,
- professionals to the West after the 1960s,
- workers to the Gulf after the 1970s oil boom.
The Gulf diaspora is mostly NRIs. The Western and older diasporas are mostly PIOs.
The diaspora as a bridge
Mains 2017 said the Indian diaspora plays an important role in South-East Asian economies and societies. Examples: Indian-origin communities in Malaysia and Singapore in trade, law, politics and culture, and links that support Act East.

Mains 2020 said the diaspora plays a decisive role in the politics and economy of America and Europe. Examples: Indian-origin lawmakers, tech CEOs, doctors and academics. Diaspora lobbying helped the India-US civil nuclear deal.
‘Indian diaspora has a decisive role to play in the politics and economy of America and European Countries.’ Comment with examples.
Mains 2023 asked about the economic and political benefits for India of the diaspora’s rise in the West: remittances (money sent home), investment and start-up links, technology transfer, and a friendly voice in foreign parliaments and media.
Indian diaspora has scaled new heights in the West. Describe its economic and political benefits for India.
Mains 2026 called the diaspora a living bridge, an economic factor and a knowledge network. A critical view: it brings soft power through yoga, cinema and food, and leverage in host politics. But it is diverse, its interests are not always India’s, and extremist fringes abroad can strain ties.
“India’s global diaspora acts as a living bridge, as a critical economic factor and knowledge network in transforming cultural heritage into geopolitical influence and strategic leverage worldwide.” Critically examine this statement.
