In a Lok Sabha reply released on 6 August 2026, MeitY set out how Indian law tackles AI deepfakes. It covers the IT Act, 2000, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the IT Rules, 2021. The 10 February 2026 amendment requires labels and traceable metadata on AI-generated content and cuts some takedown timelines from 36 hours to 3 hours.

A team led by ARIES, an autonomous institute of DST, used machine learning (U-Net) to read hand-drawn sun charts from the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory. It traced bright magnetic patches called plages from 1916 to 2007, across nine solar cycles. The results match Kodaikanal's Ca II K images and can fill gaps in long-term solar data.

At the France-hosted G7 Summit, the PM spoke on 17 June 2026 on ensuring a safe, rapid and efficient AI rollout. He stressed human-centric design under India's MANAV vision from the AI Impact Summit, and urged safe-by-design systems, common standards, action on deepfakes and Global South access.

On the Prime Minister's France visit outcomes released on 14 June 2026, India and France adopted the Innovation Roadmap 2030 and created a Joint AI Working Group on AI governance. The package includes a National Centre of Excellence for skilling in aeronautics at NSTI Kanpur, wider UPI use in France, and ISRO–CNES cooperation on microgravity and human spaceflight.

Avataar launched Varya on 12 June 2026 — a distilled video-generation model built with IndiaAI Mission support and subsidised national AI compute. Distillation cuts generation from 50 steps to 4. The firm cites internal inference-cost benchmarks of ₹0.48 per second of video. Use cases flagged range from classroom lessons to MSME ads.

ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research's Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra is a free WhatsApp AI advisory for oilseed farmers, highlighted on 11 June 2026 as kharif sowing begins. Launched on 6 February 2026, it answers in any Indian language on groundnut, mustard, sesame, sunflower, soybean, niger and other oilseeds.
