What happened

  • Completed IWAI projects in UP include the Varanasi multimodal terminal (₹182.33 crore), 11 community jetties, two electric catamarans at Varanasi and Ayodhya, and a hydrogen fuel cell vessel at Varanasi [PIB].
  • Ongoing works include a river cruise terminal at Varanasi (₹200 crore), a Regional Centre of Excellence at Varanasi (₹150 crore) and fairway work from Ghazipur to Varanasi [PIB].

Background

  • Jetties on the Ghaghara (NW-40) at Ayodhya and on the Yamuna at Mathura are also covered [PIB].

Why it matters

  • Most of UP’s waterway spending sits on the Ganga around Varanasi, which is also the cruise tourism hub.
