Battle Brief

GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is India’s Satellite-Based Augmentation System, built by ISRO and the Airports Authority of India and fully operational since 2015. It corrects GPS errors and sends integrity alerts to pilots. In June 2026 DGCA ran India’s first satellite-based landing approach on a commercial jet using GAGAN.

In the news

GAGAN: what happened?

GPS tells a plane where it is, but atmospheric conditions and other sources add errors. In flying, even a slight position error can affect safety. GAGAN is India’s fix: it watches GPS from the ground, works out the error and beams a correction from space.

  • DGCA conducted India’s first satellite-based landing system approach on a commercial jet using GAGAN in June 2026.
  • GAGAN puts India in a small group with an operational SBAS, alongside the United States, Europe and Japan.
  • It is interoperable with WAAS (US), EGNOS (Europe) and MSAS (Japan).
  • Uses beyond aviation: maritime, roads, railways, disaster management, defence, telecom timing and surveying.
Back Story

How is GAGAN different from NavIC?

GAGAN vs NavIC (PIB Backgrounder, 1 Jul 2026)
FeatureGAGANNavIC
TypeSatellite-Based Augmentation SystemIndependent regional navigation satellite system
JobImproves GPS with real-time corrections and integrity informationProvides positioning, navigation and timing
AreaIndian Flight Information RegionIndia and up to 1500 km beyond its boundary
Back Story

How is NavIC reaching beyond India?

  • In 2025, India signed an agreement with South Africa to set up a NavIC reference station.
  • The backgrounder says this will strengthen the performance and reach of India’s own navigation system beyond its borders.
  • Alongside NavIC, GAGAN is to help reduce dependence on foreign systems.
Back Story

What is “integrity information”?

  • An alert that tells the pilot when a GPS signal is unsuitable for navigation.
  • It is what makes an augmentation system safe enough for landing guidance.

What makes up the GAGAN system?

Key elements of GAGAN (PIB Backgrounder, 1 Jul 2026)
ElementNumberRole
Indian Reference Stations (INRES)15Monitor GPS signals and detect errors
Indian Master Control Centres (INMCC)2Compute corrections and integrity information
Indian Land Uplink Stations (INLUS)3Send corrections to GAGAN satellites
Communication networks4Link all stations in real time
Geostationary satellites with GAGAN payloads3Broadcast corrected signals (GSAT-8, 10, 15)
How it works

How does GAGAN correct GPS?

  1. Reference stations watch GPS signals across India
  2. Master control centres compute corrections and integrity data
  3. Uplink stations send them to geostationary satellites
  4. Satellites broadcast corrections to aircraft and other users
  5. Pilot gets a more accurate position and an alert if GPS is unsafe
Why examiners care

Why does GAGAN matter?

AngleWhat to note
Aviation safetySatellite-based approaches where ground landing aids are absent.
Self-relianceIndigenous navigation alongside NavIC cuts dependence on foreign systems.
Multi-sectorRail, road, sea, disaster response and telecom timing gain accuracy.
StrategicFirst SBAS certified for the equatorial region.
Fault Lines

What are the challenges in GAGAN?

  • GAGAN depends on GPS, a foreign constellation; NavIC is the independent system.
  • Airports and airlines must adopt satellite-based approach procedures to gain from it.
Road Ahead

What should be done next on GAGAN?

  • Publish more GAGAN-based approach procedures at regional airports.
  • Promote GAGAN-enabled receivers in transport and survey sectors.
  • Develop GAGAN and NavIC together for full indigenous coverage.

What can Prelims ask on GAGAN?

  • GAGAN = GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation; SBAS by ISRO and AAI; fully operational since 2015.
  • Payloads on GSAT-8, GSAT-10, GSAT-15; 15 INRES, 2 INMCC, 3 INLUS.
  • Interoperable with WAAS (US), EGNOS (Europe), MSAS (Japan).

How to write about GAGAN in Mains

Practice question (10 marks, 150 words): Distinguish between GAGAN and NavIC. How do they together support India’s strategic and economic needs?

  • Intro: GAGAN as SBAS, NavIC as regional system.
  • GAGAN architecture and June 2026 milestone.
  • NavIC role; South Africa reference station (2025).
  • Uses beyond aviation.
  • Conclusion: self-reliant navigation.
