UPSC Mains 2022 GS Paper 1 Q5: model answer
Discuss the meaning of colour-coded weather warnings for cyclone prone areas given by India Meteorological Department.
What the question wants
Explain what IMD's colour-coded warnings mean for cyclone-prone areas and why they matter.
How to structure it
Discuss the meaning: explain each colour with actions.
- Purpose
- The four colours
- Use and limits
How to think it through
The colours are deliberately simple: a fisherman doesn't need wind speeds, he needs to know whether to sail. Write the answer like that — colour, meaning, action.
Model answer
When Cyclone Biparjoy approached Gujarat in June 2023, IMD's red alert for Kutch helped the state move around one lakh people to safety; no lives were lost to the storm itself.
Purpose
The India Meteorological Department uses impact-based colour codes to tell officials and the public how serious a threat is and what to do.
The four colours
- Green (no warning): no action needed.
- Yellow (be aware / watch): severe weather possible; keep updated. Usually a depression or early stage cyclone.
- Orange (be prepared / alert): likely disruption to transport and power; fishermen must not go to sea; prepare to evacuate.
- Red (take action / warning): an extremely severe threat to life and property; authorities evacuate, close schools, suspend traffic.
Linked staged warnings
IMD's four-stage cyclone bulletin: pre-cyclone watch (72 hours), cyclone alert (48 hours), cyclone warning (24 hours), post-landfall outlook.
Significance and limits
- Simple to understand, easy for media and SMS (Common Alerting Protocol), even for people who cannot read a bulletin.
- Helps district officials act early.
- But the 'cry wolf' effect, language barriers and last-mile reach remain challenges.
Draw: Colour strip with one action under each colour.
Keywords, cases and data to drop in
impact-based forecasting, yellow/orange/red, four-stage bulletin, Biparjoy 2023, Common Alerting Protocol.
Where most answers lose marks
- Mixing the codes with cyclone categories by wind speed.

Neyveli, Tiruchirappalli and Atacama: Indian scientists identify Martian analogue sites
Scientists at the University of Kerala, using a laser Raman spectrometer funded under DST-FIST, have identified two minerals that make some places on Earth useful ‘Martian analogue’ sites, DST said on 16 October 2026. Melanterite was found in the lignite of Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. Gypsum was found in the Atacama Desert of Chile and in the Tiruchirappalli Badlands. Both are hydrous sulphates that record how water and rock interacted.

Ancient Gondwana wildfires recorded in Indian coal
BSIP (DST) researchers reported molecular evidence of massive wildfires in Gondwana forests nearly 250 million years ago. Using palynofacies analysis with Raman and FTIR spectroscopy on Godavari Valley Coalfield sediments, they separated high- and low-intensity fire-derived microcharcoal from other opaque particles. The study is in Geological Journal (Wiley).
