UPSC Mains 2022 GS Paper 1 Q17: model answer
The troposphere is a very significant atmospheric layer that determines weather processes. How?
What the question wants
Explain why the troposphere controls weather processes.
How to structure it
How? Explain the features of the troposphere that make it the seat of weather.
- What and where
- Features
- Weather processes in it
- Role of the tropopause
- Conclusion
How to think it through
Nearly all the air's water vapour lives in the lowest layer. No water, no clouds; no clouds, no weather. Add that the troposphere is heated from below, like a pot on a stove, so it churns. Water plus churning equals weather.
Model answer
Clouds, rain, storms, fog and cyclones all occur in the lowest layer of the atmosphere. The troposphere extends from the surface to about 8 km at the poles and 18 km at the equator, yet it holds about 75–80% of the atmosphere's mass.
Features that make it the weather layer
- Almost all water vapour (about 99%) and most dust and aerosols are here; they form clouds and act as condensation nuclei.
- Heated from below: the sun warms the ground, which warms the air. Temperature falls with height at about 6.5°C per km (normal lapse rate).
- Convection and turbulence: warm air rises and cool air sinks, mixing the layer vertically.
- Greater thickness at the equator, where strong heating drives deep convection.
Weather processes
- Condensation and precipitation: rising air cools, vapour condenses into clouds and falls as rain, snow or hail.
- Winds and pressure systems: differences in heating create pressure gradients, trade winds, monsoons and local winds.
- Cyclones and fronts: tropical and temperate cyclones, thunderstorms and western disturbances form here.
- Energy transfer: latent heat released in condensation powers storms and moves heat from tropics to poles.
- Jet streams at its upper limit steer storms and monsoon onset.
The tropopause
- The tropopause caps the troposphere; above it the stratosphere warms with height because ozone absorbs ultraviolet rays. This inversion acts as a lid, limiting vertical motion and confining weather below.
- Only the strongest thunderstorms punch briefly into the stratosphere.
Conclusion
Water vapour, heating from below and vertical mixing make the troposphere the engine of weather. Pollutants and greenhouse gases added to this layer are now changing that weather, which is why its study matters for forecasting and climate policy.

Neyveli, Tiruchirappalli and Atacama: Indian scientists identify Martian analogue sites
Scientists at the University of Kerala, using a laser Raman spectrometer funded under DST-FIST, have identified two minerals that make some places on Earth useful ‘Martian analogue’ sites, DST said on 16 October 2026. Melanterite was found in the lignite of Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. Gypsum was found in the Atacama Desert of Chile and in the Tiruchirappalli Badlands. Both are hydrous sulphates that record how water and rock interacted.

Ancient Gondwana wildfires recorded in Indian coal
BSIP (DST) researchers reported molecular evidence of massive wildfires in Gondwana forests nearly 250 million years ago. Using palynofacies analysis with Raman and FTIR spectroscopy on Godavari Valley Coalfield sediments, they separated high- and low-intensity fire-derived microcharcoal from other opaque particles. The study is in Geological Journal (Wiley).
