AI monsoon-onset forecasts sent to 3.88 crore farmers
What happened
- In Kharif 2025 an AI-based pilot sent local monsoon-onset forecasts to 3,88,45,214 farmers in 13 states by SMS through the M-Kisan portal, in five languages [Lok Sabha reply, PIB].
- The blended model used Google’s NeuralGCM, ECMWF’s AIFS and 125 years of IMD rainfall data. Phone surveys in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar found 31-52% of farmers changed planting decisions [PIB].
Background
- The pilot was run with the Development Innovation Lab-India. It forecast only the local onset date, which decides when to sow [PIB].
Why it matters
- For a rain-fed farmer the onset date matters more than the all-India seasonal total. A wrong sowing date can mean resowing costs.
