First reconstruction of topside ionosphere over India
Next story · 8 JulBackgrounder: Poshan Tracker real-time nutrition monitoring
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism have reconstructed the topside ionosphere over India for the first time by combining COSMIC radio-occultation scale-height data with ground ionosonde bottomside profiles. The method targets better electron-density estimates up to about 1,000 km for LEO satellites, HF links and NAVIC/GPS.

Topside ionosphere reconstruction over India: what happened?
The ionosphere bends and delays radio signals. Over the magnetic equator the topside is hard to model if you assume a fixed scale height. IIG’s method lets scale height change with height, then stitches it to real bottomside soundings.
- Earlier models often assumed a constant topside scale height for want of Indian-region data.
- New method derives altitudinal scale-height variation from COSMIC occultation and merges it with ionosonde bottomside EDPs.
- Supports HF skywave links and satellite navigation (GPS/NAVIC) that suffer equatorial ionospheric complexity.
Why topside modelling matters?
- Most LEO satellites fly within roughly 1,000 km altitude.
- Electron-density errors hurt communication and navigation reliability.
Why does topside ionosphere reconstruction over India matter?
- Space weather: Improves region-specific topside modelling near the geomagnetic equator.
- Services: Aids satellite operations, HF communications and navigation.
