Battle IAS current affairs title card: India's first hydrogen fuel-cell train: ~2,600 passengers (GS3 · Clean energy, 16 July 2026)
Battle Brief

Indian Railways is set to flag off India’s first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset, the Railway Ministry said on 16 July 2026. The 10-coach train carries about 2,600 passengers and will run on the 89 km Jind-Sonipat section at 75 kmph. It makes electricity onboard from hydrogen and oxygen, leaving only water vapour and heat.

India’s hydrogen fuel cell train: what happened?

Over 99% of India’s Broad Gauge routes are already electrified. So why hydrogen? A hydrogen train makes its own electricity on board and needs no overhead wire, like steam and diesel engines once carried their own power, but with no burning and no smoke. The first one is a pilot to prove that such a train can run safely in regular service.

  • The trainset has two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars, one at each end, and eight Trailer Coaches.
  • Each power car holds fuel cells, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and hydrogen cylinders.
  • India’s largest railway hydrogen refuelling facility has been set up at Jind in Haryana.
  • The system was checked by an independent third-party safety assessor, TÜV SÜD of Germany.
  • Railways is also exploring hydrogen on heritage lines such as Kalka-Shimla.
Back Story

How does a hydrogen fuel cell train work?

  • The train carries a small power plant: a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell.
  • Hydrogen from the cylinders meets oxygen from the air inside the fuel cell and makes electricity.
  • The electricity drives the traction motors.
  • The only direct by-products are water vapour and heat: no combustion, no smoke, no tailpipe carbon.
  • In short: hydrogen + oxygen gives electricity + water vapour, and the train moves.
Back Story

Where does the hydrogen come from?

  • Stage 1: hydrogen is made on site at Jind by electrolysis, which splits water using electricity, and is stored in tanks.
  • Stage 2: it is compressed to 500 bar so more fits in less space.
  • Stage 3: two independent dispensers fill it at 350 bar, so both power cars can refuel at once.
  • The plant holds nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen; its storage and supply system is approved by PESO.
Back Story

How is a flammable gas made safe?

  • Hydrogen is colourless, odourless and tasteless, and non-toxic, but highly inflammable.
  • Railways follows “defence in depth”: several independent safety layers instead of one.
  • Sensors watch for leaks, heat, flames and smoke; non-stop ventilation dilutes any small leak.
  • An automatic shut-off cuts hydrogen supply without waiting for a person.
  • Standards: NFPA-2 and the ISO 19880 series, plus PESO rules.
  • Tests before service: load box, radio frequency, oscillation and emergency brake distance trials.

How it works

How does the hydrogen chain work?

  1. Electrolysis at Jind splits water into hydrogen and oxygen
  2. Hydrogen stored, then compressed to 500 bar
  3. Dispensed at 350 bar to both power cars
  4. PEM fuel cell combines hydrogen with air’s oxygen
  5. Electricity drives motors; water vapour is the only exhaust

Why does India’s hydrogen fuel cell train matter?

AngleWhat to note
EnvironmentNear-zero emissions at the point of use.
Energy securityLess need for imported diesel on non-electrified or special lines.
TechnologyIndigenous design: RDSO specifications, integration by Medha Servo Drives, ICF on exterior design.
ScaleA 10-coach, 2,600-passenger train, larger than most abroad.
PolicySupports the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Net Zero goal.
Fault Lines

What are the challenges in India’s hydrogen fuel cell train?

  • Hydrogen is highly inflammable and cannot be seen or smelt, so safety systems must work every time.
  • The train needs its own production, compression and dispensing chain; Jind is the only such plant so far.
  • Most of the network is already electrified, so the use case is limited to special routes such as heritage lines.
  • The release gives no cost per km or hydrogen price, so its economics are not yet known.
Road Ahead

What should be done next on India’s hydrogen fuel cell train?

  • Run the pilot in regular service and publish safety and reliability data.
  • Plan refuelling plants before picking new routes.
  • Try heritage routes such as Kalka-Shimla.
  • Link the hydrogen supply to green hydrogen made from renewable power.
