In the news

A highway network is like a set of water pipes: long pipes are useful only when they are joined. These four links are the joints for the State’s big expressways.

  • The State Cabinet approved four new link expressways at a total cost of ₹17,542 crore, paid from the State’s own money.
  • Link 1 will join the Agra–Lucknow Expressway with the Purvanchal Expressway.
  • Link 2 (Farrukhabad) will connect the Etawah–Farrukhabad area towards the Ganga Expressway.
  • Link 3 (Jhansi) will connect Jhansi to the Bundelkhand Expressway, helping the defence corridor.
  • Link 4 (Jewar) will connect the Noida International Airport at Jewar to the expressway network.
  • The aim is faster travel, more industry and more jobs.
Back Story

What are Uttar Pradesh’s main expressways?

The Agra–Lucknow Expressway (about 302 km) was inaugurated in 2016. The Purvanchal Expressway (about 341 km) runs from Lucknow to Ghazipur and opened in 2021.

The Bundelkhand Expressway (about 296 km) runs from Chitrakoot to Etawah and opened in 2022. The Ganga Expressway runs from Meerut to Prayagraj and is the State’s longest.

Most of these are built by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). Industrial corridors are being planned along them.

The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor has six nodes: Agra, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Kanpur and Lucknow. Better links to Jhansi help defence factories there.
