The G20 meeting: what happened?

A family photo is a small thing at a summit, but when ministers refuse to stand together, it shows how deep the divisions are.

  • United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted the G20 Foreign Ministers in Atlanta, Georgia, days before the United States midterm elections.
  • The group photo was dropped after some European officials objected to standing with Russia’s Sergei Lavrov.
  • Mr. Rubio called it a “moment of choosing” and urged work on energy and food supply chains and freedom of navigation.
  • India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar warned that tactical calculations should not lead the group to overlook the dangers of terrorism.
  • There will likely be no joint statement. The meeting is expected to end with a chair’s summary drafted by the United States.
Back Story

What is the G20?

The G20 has 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union. Together they make up most of the world’s economy, trade and population.

It began in 1999, after the Asian financial crisis, as a forum of Finance Ministers and central bank governors. Leaders’ summits began in 2008, during the global financial crisis.

It has no permanent secretariat. The presidency rotates every year, and the past, present and next presidents work together as a ‘troika’. The United States holds the presidency in 2026.

Under India’s presidency in 2023, the African Union became a permanent member at the New Delhi summit, with the theme ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
