Highways and energy: what happened?

Better roads bring factories. Gadkari now links Uttar Pradesh’s highway push with a future where farmers also sell fuel and power.

  • At Mungra Badshahpur in Jaunpur, Gadkari inaugurated and laid foundation stones for highway projects worth more than ₹3,650 crore.
  • He said national highway works worth ₹5 lakh crore are underway in Uttar Pradesh: about ₹1 lakh crore completed, large works in progress and more in the pipeline.
  • Eight NHAI projects under the UP East office cover about 191.5 km, including the ₹1,505-crore, 63-km Rae Bareli–Prayagraj four-lane road.
  • He said farmers can become providers of energy, bitumen, aviation fuel and hydrogen, not only food.
  • He expressed confidence that Uttar Pradesh could move from importing energy to exporting it.
Back Story

Why do highways and ethanol matter for UP?

National highways are built and managed mainly through the National Highways Authority of India under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous State; faster roads cut travel time for farm produce, industry and pilgrim traffic in the east.

Ethanol blended with petrol, and newer fuels from farm waste, give farmers a second market beyond grain and cane.
