UPSC Mains 2016 GS Paper 1 Q13: model answer
Discuss the concept of air mass and explain its role in macro-climatic changes.
What the question wants
Explain air masses and their role in large-scale climate changes.
How to structure it
Discuss the concept ... and explain its role: define, classify, then link to climate.

How to think it through
An air mass is weather in a parcel: a huge blob of air that takes on the temperature and humidity of where it sat. When it moves, it carries that character with it. Where two masses meet, you get fronts, storms and climate change. Keep the classification (cP, mT, etc.) on the tip of your pen.
Model answer
A cold wave that sweeps from Canada to Texas in a few days, dropping temperatures by 20°C, is an air mass in motion. An air mass is a large body of air, hundreds to thousands of kilometres wide, with fairly uniform temperature and moisture.
Source regions and types
- Air masses form over large, uniform surfaces where air stays long enough to acquire their character.
- Continental polar (cP): cold and dry (Siberia, Canada).
- Maritime polar (mP): cool and moist (North Pacific, North Atlantic).
- Continental tropical (cT): hot and dry (Sahara, Thar).
- Maritime tropical (mT): warm and moist (Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean).
- Arctic and equatorial types at the extremes.
Role in macro-climatic changes
- Fronts form where air masses meet, causing mid-latitude cyclones, rain and snow.
- Movement of air masses brings seasonal change: cold waves, heat waves, monsoon onset.
- They transfer heat and moisture from tropics to poles, balancing global energy.
- Shifts in their paths, linked to the jet stream, cause long dry or wet spells.
Examples
- Western disturbances bring winter rain to north India.
- Polar outbreaks into the USA (2021 Texas freeze).
- Hot, dry cT air from the Thar and Iran drives north India's May heat waves and the loo.
Air masses are the building blocks of weather and climate; climate change is now altering their paths and frequency.

Where most answers lose marks
- Defining air masses without explaining their climatic role.

Neyveli, Tiruchirappalli and Atacama: Indian scientists identify Martian analogue sites
Scientists at the University of Kerala, using a laser Raman spectrometer funded under DST-FIST, have identified two minerals that make some places on Earth useful ‘Martian analogue’ sites, DST said on 16 October 2026. Melanterite was found in the lignite of Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. Gypsum was found in the Atacama Desert of Chile and in the Tiruchirappalli Badlands. Both are hydrous sulphates that record how water and rock interacted.

Ancient Gondwana wildfires recorded in Indian coal
BSIP (DST) researchers reported molecular evidence of massive wildfires in Gondwana forests nearly 250 million years ago. Using palynofacies analysis with Raman and FTIR spectroscopy on Godavari Valley Coalfield sediments, they separated high- and low-intensity fire-derived microcharcoal from other opaque particles. The study is in Geological Journal (Wiley).
