The Sitapur solar-BESS project on defence land: what happened?
The armed forces own large blocks of land, and some of it lies unused. They also pay big electricity bills for cantonments and stations. This project uses the first to cut the second.
- The Defence Minister approved a 250 MW solar plant with battery storage at the Sitapur ex-cantonment.
- NTPC will pick the builder through a competitive bid, to get the lowest power price for defence establishments.
- The Ministry calls it a benchmark for future solar-plus-storage projects on defence land.
What is a BESS and why pair it with solar?
- A Battery Energy Storage System stores electricity. Solar panels produce power only in daylight; the batteries let part of that power be used later, so supply is steadier.
- In this project, the stated aims are energy security for defence establishments in UP and lower spending on grid power over the life of the plant.
Why does the Sitapur solar-BESS project on defence land matter?
- Energy: Clean power with storage for defence establishments across UP.
- Fiscal: Expected long-term savings on grid power bills.
- Land use: Vacant defence land put to productive use under an MoD initiative.
