Battle Brief

Net foreign direct investment into India was $3.3 billion in August 2026, the third positive month in a row, according to the RBI’s October Bulletin reported by The Hindu on 24 October. Gross inflows were $11.1 billion, almost 68% higher than a year earlier, while outflows rose to $7.7 billion, mainly because foreign firms took profits home. It is a clear turnaround from five months of negative net FDI between August and December 2025.

Net FDI data: what happened?

Think of FDI as a bucket: money pours in from the top, and some leaks out at the bottom. Net FDI is what stays in the bucket.

  • Aug 2026: net FDI was $3.3 billion, positive for the third consecutive month and in seven of the last eight months.
  • Gross inflows of $11.1 billion were 24% lower than July but almost 68% higher than August 2025.
  • The US, Singapore and Mauritius gave about 72% of inflows; communication, miscellaneous services and manufacturing got over two-thirds.
  • Outflows rose to $7.7 billion (July: $7.2 billion), driven by repatriation by foreign companies rather than Indian firms investing abroad.
Back Story

What is net FDI?

  • FDI is long-term investment with a lasting stake in a business, like building a factory or buying a large share of a firm.
  • Gross FDI = all direct investment coming in. Net FDI = gross inflows minus repatriation and outward investment by Indian firms.
  • It sits in the capital account of the balance of payments and helps fund the current account deficit.
  • Unlike portfolio money, FDI is stable and non-debt creating.

Rulebook

  • FDI is governed by the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 and the Non-Debt Instruments Rules, 2019.
  • A stake of 10% or more in a listed company counts as FDI; below 10% is portfolio investment.
  • Two routes: automatic (no prior approval) and government route (approval needed).
  • Press Note 3 (2020): investment from countries sharing a land border with India needs government approval.
Fault Lines

What are the challenges?

  • High repatriation and outward FDI eat into gross inflows.
  • Heavy dependence on three source countries, including Mauritius and Singapore routes.
  • Global uncertainty and higher interest rates abroad can slow new projects.
  • Delays in approvals, contracts and disputes still worry investors.
Road Ahead

What should be done?

  • Keep tax and trade rules stable and predictable.
  • Speed up contract enforcement and dispute settlement.
  • Attract FDI into manufacturing through PLI and better logistics.
  • Widen sources beyond a few countries.
