UPSC Mains 2021 GS Paper 1 Q2: model answer
Trace the rise and growth of socio-religious reform movements with special reference to Young Bengal and Brahmo Samaj.
What the question wants
Trace the rise and growth of socio-religious reform movements, focusing on Young Bengal and the Brahmo Samaj.
How to structure it
Trace: follow development over time. 'With special reference to' means these two get most of the space.
- Background
- Brahmo Samaj: rise and splits
- Young Bengal
- Wider growth and assessment
How to think it through
'Trace' is a time machine word. Go in order: Rammohan's Brahmo Sabha (1828), Derozio's students at Hindu College (late 1820s), Debendranath and Keshub Chandra Sen, the splits of 1866 and 1878. Young Bengal was the rebellious teenager of the family: brilliant, loud and gone fast.
Model answer
Western education, the printing press and colonial rule stirred reform in 19th-century Bengal, which became the first centre of socio-religious reform.
Brahmo Samaj
- Founded by Raja Rammohan Roy as the Brahmo Sabha (1828): monotheism, opposition to idolatry and sati, support for women's rights and modern education.
- Debendranath Tagore revived it (Tattvabodhini Sabha) after Rammohan's death.
- Keshub Chandra Sen spread it beyond Bengal; splits produced the Brahmo Samaj of India (1866) and the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj (1878).
- It campaigned for widow remarriage, women's education and against caste; the Native Marriage Act of 1872 followed its campaign.
Young Bengal
- Led by Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a teacher at Hindu College (1826–31), his students questioned tradition and authority.
- They were radical rationalists who championed freedom of thought, press freedom and women's rights.
- Limits: little mass base and short-lived; but they influenced later leaders.
Wider growth
- Prarthana Samaj in Bombay, Arya Samaj, Ramakrishna Mission, Aligarh movement, Satyashodhak Samaj.
To sum up
The Brahmo Samaj gave reform an institutional form, while Young Bengal gave it rationalist energy. Together they opened the way for India's wider reform and national awakening.
Draw: Family tree of the Brahmo Samaj splits.
Keywords, cases and data to drop in
Brahmo Sabha 1828, Derozio, Hindu College, Debendranath Tagore, Keshub Chandra Sen, Native Marriage Act 1872.
Where most answers lose marks
- Mixing up the order of leaders and splits. 'Trace' rewards a clear timeline.
