Ancient Society: Varna, ashrama and marriage

Key points

  • Varna is the four-fold scheme, first in the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda Book 10); jati is the real local birth group.
  • Varna grew rigid in the later Vedic age; Buddhism and Jainism rejected birth-based superiority.
  • Four ashramas (first all named in the Jabala Upanishad) and four purusharthas.
  • Eight forms of marriage; anuloma tolerated, pratiloma condemned; same-gotra marriage barred.

Prelims box: facts and traps

  • Approved marriages: Brahma, Daiva, Arsha, Prajapatya.
  • Disapproved: Asura, Rakshasa, Paishacha.
  • Grihastha: most praised stage in the Dharmashastras.

Varna and jati

Quick answerVarna is the four-fold textbook scheme; jati is the real, local birth group, and there were hundreds.

Varna and jati are two different things, and UPSC expects you to keep them apart. Varna is the four-fold scheme: Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. It first appears in the Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda (Book 10), a late hymn. Jati is the real, local, birth-based group tied to a job, and there were hundreds of them.

PeriodWhat changed
RigvedicSociety was fairly fluid; occupation was not strictly fixed by birth
Later VedicVarnas became hereditary; Brahmanas and Kshatriyas claimed top place; Shudras were made to serve
Age of the BuddhaNew groups (gahapatis, merchants) became wealthy; Buddhism and Jainism rejected birth-based superiority
Dharmashastras (Manusmriti)Rules for each varna; mixed unions said to create new jatis
Gupta and afterMore jatis as tribes and guilds became castes; untouchability hardened (Fa-hien’s chandalas)

This links to the GS I Society paper. Mains 2023 asked: Why is caste identity in India both fluid and static? Mains 2023 Use history to show the fluid (changing) side: tribes and guilds turning into jatis, and groups claiming higher status over time.

Why is caste identity in India both fluid and static?

What UPSC asks

Prelims: Purusha Sukta, varna vs jati. Mains: caste fluid and static (2023). Next likely: caste census debates.

Ashramas, purusharthas and marriage

Texts divided an ideal life into four stages, the ashramas. The Jabala Upanishad is the first to name all four. These rules were meant for the upper three varnas, and for men.

AshramaStage of life
BrahmacharyaStudent: living with the teacher, celibate
GrihasthaHouseholder: family, work, gifts; the most praised stage in the Dharmashastras
VanaprasthaRetiring to the forest
SannyasaGiving up the world

The four aims of life (purusharthas) were dharma (duty), artha (wealth), kama (pleasure) and moksha (freedom from rebirth).

Forms of marriage (Manusmriti)Approved?
Brahma, Daiva, Arsha, PrajapatyaApproved: the father gives the daughter
Gandharva (love marriage)Allowed, but less approved
Asura (bride bought), Rakshasa (capture), Paishacha (seduction or force)Disapproved

Remember anuloma, where the man is from a higher varna, which was tolerated, and pratiloma, where the woman is from a higher varna, which was condemned. Marriage within the same gotra (clan line) was forbidden. Svayamvara, where a princess chose her husband, appears in the epics.

What UPSC asks

Prelims: four ashramas, purusharthas, eight forms of marriage. Mains: ideal and reality. Next likely: marriage law reform.

Mains box: analysis and answer points

  • Caste fluid and static (Mains 2023): tribes and guilds becoming jatis; status claims.
  • Ideal and reality: text rules versus practice.
  • Likely next angle: caste census debates.
