UPSC Mains 2013 GS Paper 1 Q8: model answer
Discuss the contributions of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad to pre- and post-independent India.
What the question wants
Discuss Azad's contributions before and after independence.
How to structure it
Discuss two phases: pre-independence and post-independence.
- Journalism and Khilafat
- Congress leadership
- Minister of Education
- Legacy
How to think it through
Azad is a two-act play. Act one: young editor of Al-Hilal, Khilafat leader, youngest Congress president (1923), opposed to Partition. Act two: India's first Education Minister, founder of the IITs, UGC and cultural academies. National Education Day (11 November) is his birthday. A split of words, 50–50, keeps both acts fair.
Model answer
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888–1958) was a scholar, journalist and nationalist who stood for Hindu–Muslim unity.
Before independence
- Founded the Urdu weekly Al-Hilal (1912) to rouse nationalist feeling among Muslims; it was banned.
- A leader of the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movements.
- Became the youngest president of the Congress (1923) and again from 1940 to 1946, leading it during Quit India and negotiations with the Cripps and Cabinet Missions.
- Firmly opposed the two-nation theory and Partition.
After independence
- India's first Minister of Education (1947–58).
- Supported the founding of IIT Kharagpur (1951), the University Grants Commission (1953) and the Sangeet Natak, Sahitya and Lalit Kala Akademis.
- Promoted free and compulsory elementary education and adult education.
Legacy
- His birthday, 11 November, is celebrated as National Education Day; awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1992.
Role in negotiations
- Led Congress in talks with the Cripps Mission (1942) and the Simla Conference (1945); his 'India Wins Freedom' gives his account of the Partition years.
As a scholar
- His Tarjuman-ul-Quran, a commentary on the Quran, argued for a humane, inclusive reading of Islam.
- He founded the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (1950) to link India with the world.
Where this leaves India
Azad's life bridged the freedom struggle and nation-building. He fought for a united India and then built the institutions that educated it.
