UPSC Mains 2018 GS Paper 1 Q3: model answer

Throw light on the significance of the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi in the present times.

10 marks150 wordsDirective: Answer

What the question wants

Throw light on the relevance of Gandhi's ideas in the present day.

How to structure it

Throw light on: explain the significance, with current applications and honest limits.

  1. Truth and non-violence
  2. Economy and environment
  3. Social harmony and governance
  4. Limits and conclusion

How to think it through

Gandhi said 'Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.' Climate change has turned that into policy. Pick four to five Gandhian ideas and give each a present-day example: Swachh Bharat, khadi, the Mission LiFE campaign on sustainable lifestyles, conflict resolution, trusteeship and CSR. A little honesty about limits makes it a mature answer.

Model answer

Mahatma Gandhi's ideas remain a reference for India and the world, more than seven decades after his death.

Truth and non-violence

  • Ahimsa and satyagraha inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela; the UN marks 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • Peaceful protest and dialogue remain the core of democratic politics.

Economy and environment

  • Swadeshi and village self-reliance echo in Atmanirbhar Bharat, khadi and MSME support.
  • Simple living and 'enough for need, not greed' underpin sustainable consumption and India's Mission LiFE.
  • Trusteeship anticipates corporate social responsibility.

Social harmony and governance

  • Anti-untouchability, Hindu–Muslim unity and gender equality address present social tensions.
  • Gram swaraj inspires panchayati raj; cleanliness inspired the Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • Ends and means: ethics in public life and civil services.

Limits

  • Some ideas, like opposing large-scale machinery, need adaptation to a modern economy.

Where this leaves India

Gandhi's thought is not a museum piece; adapted to new conditions, it offers answers to violence, inequality and environmental crisis.

Keywords, cases and data to drop in

Satyagraha, sarvodaya, trusteeship, gram swaraj, International Day of Non-Violence, Mission LiFE, Swachh Bharat.

Where most answers lose marks

  • Writing Gandhi's biography instead of present relevance.
