UPSC Mains 2014 GS Paper 1 Q8: model answer

What were the major political, economic, and social developments in the world which motivated the anti-colonial struggle in India?

10 marks150 wordsDirective: Answer

What the question wants

Identify political, economic and social developments abroad that motivated India's anti-colonial struggle.

How to structure it

What were: list developments under three heads, and link each to India.

  1. Political
  2. Economic
  3. Social and intellectual
  4. Conclusion

How to think it through

This is world history wearing an Indian hat. Use three columns, as the question asks: political (Japan's victory over Russia in 1905, the Russian Revolution, the World Wars), economic (the Great Depression), social and intellectual (liberal and socialist ideas, Irish nationalism). Each fact needs one sentence on how it changed India.

Model answer

Nehru recalled the thrill of Japan's 1905 victory over Russia; events abroad shaped India's freedom movement in its ideas, methods and timing.

Political developments

  • The American and French revolutions gave ideas of liberty and equality.
  • Italian and Irish nationalism inspired early nationalists; the Irish Home Rule movement inspired India's Home Rule Leagues.
  • Japan's victory over Russia (1905) broke the myth of European superiority.
  • The Russian Revolution (1917) inspired socialist and labour movements.
  • Wilson's 'self-determination' after the First World War raised hopes, which were soon disappointed.
  • The Second World War weakened Britain.

Economic developments

  • The Great Depression (1929) caused a crash in agricultural prices and rural distress, feeding the Civil Disobedience movement.

Social and intellectual developments

  • Liberalism, socialism and democracy spread through English education.
  • Anti-colonial struggles in Asia and Africa and the Khilafat issue after the defeat of Ottoman Turkey.

Global events gave Indian nationalists ideas, inspiration and opportunities, showing that the freedom struggle was part of a worldwide anti-colonial wave.
