10 marks150 wordsDirective: Discuss

What the question wants

Show how rock-cut architecture is a key source for early Indian art and history.

How to structure it

Discuss: what we learn from rock-cut monuments, with examples across periods.

  1. What it is
  2. Examples by period
  3. What it reveals about art
  4. What it reveals about history and society

How to think it through

Rock-cut monuments survive where wooden buildings perished; that's why they are a source. Walk chronologically: Barabar (Mauryan), Karla and Ajanta (Buddhist), Ellora (three faiths), Mahabalipuram (Pallava). For each, one fact about art and one about history.

Model answer

Rock-cut architecture, carved out of living rock, has survived for over two thousand years and preserves evidence that perishable buildings could not.

Examples

  • Barabar caves (3rd century BCE), granted by Ashoka to the Ajivikas.
  • Buddhist chaityas and viharas at Bhaja, Karla and Ajanta (2nd century BCE to 5th century CE).
  • Ellora: Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves, including the monolithic Kailasa temple (Rashtrakuta).
  • Pallava rathas at Mahabalipuram.

What they tell us about art

  • The shift from wooden-style chaityas to monolithic temples; Ajanta's murals preserve painting techniques.

What they tell us about history

  • Donor inscriptions name merchants, guilds, women and monks, revealing trade and patronage.
  • Co-existence of faiths (Ellora) and royal support for different sects.
  • Dress, court life and daily life in Ajanta's paintings.
  • Udayagiri's Varaha panel (Gupta, c. 401 CE) shows political symbolism in stone.

Final word

Rock-cut architecture is a stone archive of early India's religion, patronage, trade and art, which is why historians treat it as a primary source.
