Model answer

Agricultural supply chain management covers every step from input supply to the consumer's plate: harvest, grading, storage, transport, processing, marketing and retail.

Scope

  • Input chains: seeds, fertiliser, credit.
  • Post-harvest: aggregation, grading, packaging, cold storage, warehousing.
  • Logistics: reefer transport, Kisan Rail, Krishi Udan.
  • Markets: APMC mandis, e-NAM, exports.
  • Information: traceability, price data, demand forecasting.

Significance

  • Cuts post-harvest loss, estimated by a NABCONS study (2022) at about ₹1.5 lakh crore a year.
  • Raises farmers' share of the consumer rupee, which is low for perishables.
  • Controls food inflation from onion and tomato price spikes.
  • Supports exports needing quality and traceability.
  • Creates rural non-farm jobs.

Initiatives: Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (₹1 lakh crore), PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana, 10,000 FPOs, Operation Greens, warehouse receipts under WDRA.

A strong supply chain turns production into income; it is the missing link between India's record harvests and farmer prosperity.
